“Doubt isn’t the opposite of faith; it is an element of faith.”
– Paul Tillich (via thanatesque) why haven’t I read any Tillich yet everything seems to indicate I would love his shit (via watchlet) Yes. This is something Fundamentalists can’t grasp for the life of them. Faith is, by definition, believing something that you cannot prove. (via budgiebazooka) ...

House+Sign Analysis : Ravenclaw Virgo
Ravenclaw is the natural house of a Virgo, as both are very work-oriented and like to keep an order. However, unlike Gryffindors and Slytherins in this sign, Ravenclaws see no need to stress over the job they are constantly doing, instead they just see it as mentally stimulating and they thrive upon that rather than stress. Ravenclaw Virgos are what one might call “work-a-holics” in way that...

watchlet: this is a fucking beautiful webcomic and one that really takes advantage of the web part. i am seriously admiring it right now. Whoa. This is cool! The parallax comic thing is pretty neat. Mind the autoplay background noise on page 3. The artist wrote an article on his process. It looks like a bit of programming wizardry and a LOT of pencil drawings.

Audiophile Josh is not amused
Pretty sure the voice recordings weren’t that awful before I exported them to mp3 and uploaded them to soundcloud. If this becomes a Thing, I’ll have to figure out a different method.  Seems like it’s Soundcloud compressing it all to hell. I guess we’ll have to limit ourselves to 1 voice recording per day, and upload straight to tumblr.

Asking Candidates Tougher Questions About Faith -... →
rosalarian: From the article: I care a lot if a candidate is going to be a Trojan horse for a sect that believes it has divine instructions on how we should be governed. My fear for this election season in a nutshell. “But I do want to know if a candidate places fealty to the Bible, the Book of Mormon (the text, not the Broadway musical) or some other authority higher than the...

A Radical New Definition of Addiction Creates a... →
I don’t know how influential ASAM is on the DSM5, but at first glance their philosophy really appeals to me. I appreciate any effort to de-stigmatize mental illness. I want to quote this whole article. Many people in the population at large see addiction as a moral problem—‘Why don’t they just stop?’” says Dr. Neil Capretto, medical director of Gateway Rehabilitation Center in Pittsburgh and...

Follow-up: Sleeping fewer hours to feel better
Well, I’d (kind of) call the experiment today a success! I went to bed ~10pm last night and woke up at 2:30am. I had enough energy today to make breakfast and get a lot of chores done. I was pretty droopy mid-day, but I kind of forgot to eat lunch until 4pm. I’m feeling sleepy now, so I’m going to bed soon. I wonder if I’ll wake up super early again, or if being more worn...

Er, by “that sleep thing” I meant this article: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-be-a-morning-person-and-have-more-time-for/  Wherein basically you go to sleep when you’re tired and (tricky part) get up the first time you wake up, and don’t go back to sleep. In theory, you’ll wake up between sleep cycles and will get as much sleep as you need, and won’t...

Trying that sleep thing
Last night I went to bed aaround 10:00pm and woke up at 2:30, feeling pretty wide awake. Will 4 and a half hours of sleep get me through the day? We’ll see.

rosalarian: ladiesmakingcomics: How media clearly reflects the sexism and the racism we cannot see in ourselves. I wanted my first-year film students to understand what happens to a story when actual human beings inhabit your characters, and the way they can inspire storytelling. And I wanted to teach them how to look at headshots and what you might be able to tell from a headshot. So for...

Abuse Culture →
thetart: writingpoemsoutloudinpublic: [TW: physical/emotional/sexual abuse, abuse culture, rape culture] I’ve only ever heard one other person (Kavitiya!) use this term, but I think it’s been incredibly helpful, at least for my own thinking. Abuse culture basically functions like rape culture, except that it exists to enable [emotional/physical/sexual/financial/psychiatric/etc] abuse and...
